DVD SP: Meaning of "Pan-Scan and Letterbox"?

DVD SP: Meaning of "Pan-Scan and Letterbox"? (May 05, 2009 04:15PM) eidschun
Does anyone know what the meaning of "Pan-Scan and Letterbox" is in DVD SP? I can't find any explanation in the manual. I know what "Pan & Scan" is, and what "Letterbox" is, but I can't imagine what "Pan-Scan and Letterbox" means. After all, how can DVD SP possibly display in both modes simultaneously?(!). It's either one or the other, the way I see it.

Thanks.

Robert,

Where are you seeing this in DVD SP?

Hi Ken,

Here are images of the tabs in the Inspector in DVD SP where you're given the opportunity to select "Pan-Scan & Letterbox". (I've selected "Pan-Scan & Letterbox" on each tab.) I don't understand what that term means on either of these two tabs.

Confusing isn't it. If you are working with widescreen video then pick 16:9 letterbox.

OK. Thanks, Ken.

But just out of curiosity, do you know what the "Pan-Scan and Letterbox" setting does?

Thanks.

Confuse people. (ggg)

It’s really is an oxymoron, Pan and Scan is 4:3 and Letterbox is 16:9. The two are opposites.

I think it just allows the individual DVD player to pick the format. If the DVD player is set by the owner to display 16:9 images in letterbox, it will display in letterbox. If a person has their DVD player to display Pan and Scan, then that same DVD will display that way in the player. I don't know how well Pan and Scan is supported by DVD players, though.
