Confusing isn't it. If you are working with widescreen video then pick 16:9 letterbox.

Confuse people. (ggg)

It’s really is an oxymoron, Pan and Scan is 4:3 and Letterbox is 16:9. The two are opposites.

I think it just allows the individual DVD player to pick the format. If the DVD player is set by the owner to display 16:9 images in letterbox, it will display in letterbox. If a person has their DVD player to display Pan and Scan, then that same DVD will display that way in the player. I don't know how well Pan and Scan is supported by DVD players, though.
