using an m4a audio file in FCP7

How does one use an m4a file in FCP 7? I have converted it to a mp3, and a QT "movie". Import and both will play in the viewer but drop it in the Timeline and I get the red needs to be rendered bar, Apply render and I consistently get "general error". Very frustrating.
