If you read the article, it says Compressor is the way to go for the conversion because of the Optical Flow Technology that blends the frames.
Not sure about converting in the FCP X timeline. You could try it and see how it looks.
But, IMO, Compressor is the safer bet.

Question.

In this thread Mitchell wanted to convert 24 fps to 29.97 fps and this can be done in either FCP X or Compressor.

My question is, if you create a 29.97 timeline in FCP and drop the 24 fps clip into the time and then from the Retime menu (attached) select Optical Flow, will Optical Flow be applied to the frame rate conversion in the timeline? Would the quality of a frame rate conversion using Optical Flow in FCP be as good as converting the frame rate in Compressor?

It's worth testing but why not export a Master File and use Compressor where you know it will be done correctly as you state in your article, Ken?

In the past, with legacy, I have always used Compressor.

I was just wondering if done in X using Optical Flow, would the quality be the same. After all, FCP X is so much more advanced than FCP legacy.

Why do they need 29.97? How is this to be distributed?

Interesting. How did you get the deal with the airlines?

I'm more interested in the media format they want it. Do they just want a file? Are they playing it on DVD?

So it's for one of those little monitors on the back of the seats.

Will they give you a free ticket to somewhere so you can see it? ;-)

Sounds good. What airline? I'll look for it when I fly.

It just seems to weird to me that they can't play back a 24fps file. Likely the person telling you what they need has no knowledge of these things.

Hopefully, they have knowledge of flying the plane.
