This has happened to me many times with HDV tapes whether or not I used "Log & Capture" or "Capture Now". I believe it has to do with the long GOP format. When the shot pans or changes to a different angle within the same take, FCP sees it as a different scene so it creates a different clip. I actually appreciated that because I would ID it accordingly, i.e., "Pan and zoom from wide shot of audience to speaker". If I needed to keep it as a single shot in the timeline, I would "splice" them together. As I recall, the time code was continuous.
