Clean Key against white background in FCP X

Is there a way in FCP X to get a clean key (remove the white background) in this pic (pic #1)? The Keyer settings cannot separate the lighter parts within the shape of the helmet. I got some good results with a Draw Mask around the edges but that would be too difficult to use in the face-guard area (pic #2).

I'd do-over the graphic in Photoshop and lift the problem white areas.

If you're in Photoshop might as well just remove all the white parts there and save as a transparent PNG file. The wand tool will do on that graphic but be sure to use some good setting otherwise you might get a white outline around the darker areas.
