Hi Group,

I'm about to replace the boot drive in my 2010 iMac that I use for cutting with FCP 5.1.4. Is the SSD suitable and faster than a HDD?

SSD is always faster than a spinning disk. But results may vary. I have an external Sandisk SSD hooked up via USB 3 going thorough a hub that my FCP libraries live on as I edit and I get more hangs (spinning beachball icons) than I do on my spinning disk RAID which is hooked up via Thunderbolt 2. I may try hooking the SSD straight to the computer but like pretty much all computers there's just not enough I/O. But I might be able to move something around.

SSD's are much faster as a boot drive. However, if you are running fcp5.x.x what OS are you running. Earlier versions of Mac OSX do not support SSD Trim. The later versions of OSX which did support Trim only supported Trim on Apple SSD's and not 3rd party SSD's. Later OSX versions such as El Capitan have trim support for 3rd party SSD's. Trim is a maintenance routine for SSD drives, without which the drive will fail pretty quickly.

That Mac is running 10.6.8. I already ordered the SSD and it's being delivered on the 11th. Should I return it and get regular HD?

Hi Ben, as far as I'm aware OSX 10.6.8 was an early adopter of SSD trim but only for Apple supplied SSD's. There was a third party utility called Trim Enabler, not sure if that is still available though. You'll need to do your own research into how it can be done in Snow Leopard. I have heard of a method used in Terminal but I'm not sure for which OS. It will be interesting to hear your findings. Good luck.

Should I install it on the new drive as soon as I have it working? Or on the old original drive which I'll clone over to the new SSD?

Install on the new SSD drive and then verify that trim is enabled. Enjoy your new SSD.

I installed Trim (4) on my newer iMac (OS 10.14.6) before I realized that it has a HDD not an SSD. Is this gonna cause trouble?

Hi Ben, glad all is well with the SSD. As to your old drive having Trim Enabler installed it should be fine as Trim is not implemented on spinning HDD's
