Media drive advice (November 17, 2020 08:25AM) benvideo
Hi Ken & Group.
I want to replace some big old G-Drive 4Tb media drives and would appreciate some advice. I'm editing on a MacBookPro.
Thanks,

What connectivity is available on your MacBookPro?

Hi David,
Why did you quit facebook. I miss our little arguments.????

USB and one of the many variations of firewire.

Thanks,

I'd recommend using Firewire (aka IEEE 1394) if possible. Firewire provides a sustained data stream, which FCP prefers. However, if your MacBookPro has USB 3.0, those speeds may be sufficient. Do NOT use USB 2.0 - you'll get the dreaded "Dropped Frames" error.

DH, I knew all that. I was looking for a brand recommendation. And you didn't answer my FB question.
Thanx,

I know. ;-)

Personally, I use RAID-1 (mirrored) drives for safety - I've had too many drives fail in the past. I have 2 G-Technology units and 3 Newer Technology units that have all worked very well the past several years. OWC or B&H should have some good choices.
