16x9 QT clips put in IDVD 08 come out 4x3

16x9 QT clips put in IDVD 08 come out 4x3 (June 28, 2008 03:24PM) bestnest
I have a problem--- When I try to get a 16x9 clip from FCP 6 v03 / quicktime into IDVD 08 - 7-02 it alway comes out a 4x3. Is 720 x 480 the right size? I have the project selected as a 16x9 and not 4x3. I checked preferences and do not see anything wrong there. I’m shooting DV tape Using DV NTSC atomorphic The event was recorded in 16x9 a 30fps Even the Quicktime file out on my desk top Shows 16X9
When it goes to 4x3 the people are talll and thin whick does not look right.
In the past I have not had this problem. I’m shooting with a new Canon XH A1.
Before I was using Sony 2100 and FX1 and not problem.
Is there a problem mixing 29.97 and 30 FPS in FCP time line.

Thanks Dennis Best

Hi Dennis,

Anamorphic video is something special. In fact it IS a 4:3 frame format with the widescreen video pixels squeezed inside the frame. Apps like FCP, DVDSP and the QT player recognize the anamorphic flag within the video and stretch the 4:3 frame to its widescreen aspect ratio. iDVD does not always recognize this anamorphic flag and treats the anamorphic video as regular 4:3.

But you can change this. Just open your movie in the QT player and do the following:

1. Choose Window > Show Movie Properties.
2. In the Properties window, click Video Track in the Name column.
3. Click the Visual Settings button.
4. Deselect the checkbox for Preserve Aspect Ratio.
5. Change the Scaled Size:
For NTSC, enter 853 x 480 (instead of 720 x 480)
7. Choose File > Save to save the movie.

Now import this movie in iDVD and it will treat the video as widescreen.

Best wishes,

Ronny
