Hard Drive or flash-based cameras with FCP compatibility? (July 03, 2008 11:28PM) jimbrady
Love the new site, Ken.

I have a client who needs (or desperately wants) the ability to capture multiple hours of video without re-loading. Can you suggest a camera that would allow this with FCP? If not, perhaps a workflow(including iMovie or MPEG Streamclip or other) that would make this at least somewhat manageable?

He is a stand-up comic who regularly records his 3-hour show without the help of a camera operator.

Thanks in advance

Any DVCam camcorder that takes full size cassettes can record up to 184 minutes to tape. Or any camcorder with a Firewire out can be used with an external hard drive recorder that will record in QT native DV NTSC. The FS4Pro HD-100 records over 7 hours of DV. There are other Firestore models available from Focus Enhancements and other manufacturers such as Laird and CitiDisk. When ready to edit, simply transfer (copy) the files from the recorder to your media drive ... takes about 5 minutes per hour of footage.
