Which Codec to use

I was using h.264 for all my projects.
I created this 19 minute project for work that has a background gradient that goes from a light blue to dark blue.
When I output to h.264, the gradient is an unattractive mess. I tried to play around with some other codecs. Nothing helped it to look better.
Any thoughts?

Why are you used H.264, what is your final delivery?

For this particular project, we plan to show it in full 1080i HD on a 42inch HDTV.
Usually, our projects get rendered for web use and digital distribution, to explain the H.264

Not necessarily trying to play H.264 content to a 42" HDTV. Just was playing around with different codecs to try and eliminate the bizarre banding that is being created by the gradient.
Since we are accustomed to outputting in H.264, I planned to do that first, merely for archival purposes (and who knows, maybe someday after the review on the HDTV, we'll eventually post this content to the web).
