Gypaetus,

Try switching to 1080HD50i. Also I would capture in the easy setup 1080iHD50i Apple intermediate codec. This will really help in editing HDV and give you great results. It will take more disk space.

My new HV 30 and FCP didn't like each other at first, but imovie immediately recognised the VTR and captured to Apple intermediate.
After much going in circles I went back to the Camera side of the HV 30 and toggled through the recording options out of HDV to HDV25 (I live in PAL country (NZ)) and back to HDV. When I switched back to the playback side of the HV 30 Fcp 6.0.4 now recognised the cameras existence and log and capture now function. Easy setup is currently set to HDV-1080i50. I would guess that in NTSC land (i.e., North America) the setting would be HDV-1080i60.

My only conclusion is that something inside the camera's firmware(internal software) there is a glitch that prevents the camera from properly announcing itself/HDV format detail on firewire.

note: that to change between: Auto HDV/DV and DV locked settings in the HV 30 playback mode, TWO conditions must be met: 1) the AV to DV conversion must be set to OFF. and 2) the firewire cable must be detached. Neither is obvious, though 1) is mentioned in the manual.

FYI. I've had a quick go at colour grading, and it seems to me as though the the three way colour corrector works faster and smoother with HDV, than with PAL DV (SD). go figure.
