External Hard drive options (July 21, 2008 08:05AM) Gunther Maier
I would like to know what external, fast drives are favorites out there for 500 GIG up to use with FCP?

Hi Gunther:

Most of the newer external drives are pretty much the same. I probably have more Seagates than any other, but Maxtor, Nexstar, Western, all work well. If all you want to do is transfer data, you can get by with a USB 2, but for editing with FCP, you really need to make sure that you use Firewire.

I second Ken's choice.

Had Lacie for years (many of them) without problems (others complained on forums about them never understood),
then the latest model 1 TB can't use as a scratch drive, to slow, affects playback in FCP.
Use it as a storage / back up.
Bought Western, OK, but funny, like it's going to sleep and crackly noise when copying files last time (2 weeks old).

CalDigit wasn't available, I was in a hurry (when buying Western) after a stormy night and one of my old trusty LaCie
wouldn't dismount (and after restart wouldn't mount).
Interestingly, the following day I upgraded OS and my Lacie is again working like a charm.
Bought CalDigit and Western is relegated to kitchen to be used a cheese grater.
