Loading FCP

This morning I was unable to open any project in the FCP 5.0.1. FCP doesn't open from Applications folder either. When I click on the icon it loads to the point of "loading audio" and then shuts down. Before I opened FCP today, I moved the entire project I am working on, including capture scratch, to an external hard drive, which I know is risky. I backed it up to avoid ruining the project -- but did not expect to affect the software. I reinstalled FCP 5.0.1 and cannot open this version, either. However, I can open the 4.5 version that remains on my hard drive. I looked into the directions on how to move a project down in FCP, but can't open 5.0 to do the export! Does anyone have a solution?
