External Monitor Difficulty

First Time forum member, here, and new Final Cut user. I would appreciate any help I can get. I've heard this is a fantastic forum from someone in my MAC user group.
I'm using Final Cut Express 2 and I'm experiencing external monitor playback issues (no sound, no picture). I have a G5, running Tiger, Dual 2, 5 gig RAM, 128 v-ram, scratch disk 300 gig. I'm firewired to a JVC DV tape deck.
Here's the confusing issue: I can capture video (Firewire seems okay, so far) and I can see video and audio in the capture dialog and on my external monitor. But when I go to playback a clip from the timeline -- no video or audio on the external monitor.
I've tried every patch cable configuration, user prefs and system prefs settings -- still to no avail. It almost seems like the firewire is only working in one direction -- but I feel like I'm overlooking a simple software toggle.

HI Steve,

Give this a try.

View menu > Video Playback > Firewire DV-NTSC

In The View menu > External Video > All Frames.

Thanks, Ken. I had tried the first step, but not the second. I'll give it a try. I found that I had the same problem with Final Cut Express 4 on my MacBook Pro. I'll check out your solution on it also.

No, Ken, it didn't. I could not find any External Video > All Frames option in FCE2 or FCE4. Thanks again for you fast response. I greatly appreciate all your effort in creating and maintaining your site.
