HI Christoph,

I've pulled old FW HDs off the shelf after a few years, they still work fine.

Hi All ,

The Hard Drives working after a few Years of inactivity is Very Good News.

We just started using SD HC cards and were planing to send the media to External Hard Drives to Free up the HD SC cards, and Computer Drive Space After we complete the Project.

So, by daily editing use the hard drive will not suffer the above effect. Is this a true statement?

According to the article -- it doesn't have to be daily use -- just occasional.
I've the impression that once every six months is acceptable.
The article says hard drives slowly 'de-magnetize' over time -- but use detects the problem and shifts blocks of data if necessary to refresh the data and keep it viable.
You see none of this happening. It's an internal process, as explained in the article.

I think what happens here is what we Dutch call "panic-football". I think HD manufacturers would lose a lot of their credibility if they would make practically worthless data storage devices. It would be a disaster for all archives that store a lot of important data on HD's that aren't attached to a mainframe or standalone computer for a long time.
I don't believe this story. A nice urban legend.

.. a good one for the Mythbusters, though... (-;

greetings,
Jasper
