compressor problem (September 23, 2008 10:56AM) Vicki
My new IMac G5 with Leopard installed is giving me problems with Compressor. I am getting an error message: unable to connect to background process. I checked the Apple site and they told me to go to /library/receipts. I don't have receipts in my library. Now I am at a loss how to get around this problem. Maybe I need to reinstall compressor.

Ken,

Followed the directions and could not find:
0. com.apple.Compressor.CompressorSharedService.plist
0. /Library/Application Support/Apple Qmaster (the folder)
0. /Library/Frameworks/AECore.framework
0. /Library/Frameworks/Compressor.framework
0. /Library/Frameworks/MediaServerAPI.framework
0. /Library/Frameworks/Qmaster.framework
0. /Library/Logs/Qmaster (the folder)
0. /Library/PreferencePanes/Apple Qmaster.prefPane
0. /Library/Receipts/Compressor.pkg
0. /Library/Receipts/ProMediaIO.pkg
0. /Library/Receipts/Qmaster.pkg
0. /Library/Receipts/Qmaster_Frameworks.pkg
0. /Library/StartupItems/Qmaster (the folder)
0. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
0. Type the following path: _/usr/sbin/
0. qmasterca
0. qmasterd
0. qmasterprefs
0. qmasterqd
0. Type the following path: _/var/spool/qmaster/

My assumption would be that compressor for whatever reason did not install properly and by trashing all I could, I can now re-install compressor and motion. Yes?

thanks for your help

What Mac and Mac OS are you on? What version of Compressor (FC Studio)?

How did you re install?

IMac, 10.5.5, new. Final cut studio 5.1 and the compressor that is packaged with final cut. I installed only compressor, Apple Qmaster and Motion.

How are you going to Compressor from FCP, when you get "unable to connect to background process".

Do a little test. Create a very short QT self contained movie from FCP.

Set In and Out points.

File > Export > QT (Not with Conversion). Make Self Contained, Use Current Settings, Do Not Recompress all frames.

Drop the QT export into Compressor and see if it works.

Ken,

Been there, done that and tried it again. Same error message. I never go directly into Compressor. I am thinking I made some error setting up the computer in the first place. Maybe I should wipe the drive and install Tiger instead of Leopard.

Hi Vicki,

At this point I think that a re install is in order. I would think that FCP 5.1 would run better on Tiger. I'm hoping that your new iMac will let you install Tiger. If this works, don't upgrade QT past 7.4.1 (don't go to 7.5).

You are installing on your boot drive, right?

Ken,

Thanks for the help, it'll take me a few days to complete this project. I'll let you know how it turns out.
