FCP 5 -Kern_protection_failure (June 16, 2008 01:57PM) Keith Gilliam
I just installed Final Cut Studio 5 on my G4 PCI Graphics (upgraded processor to 1 ghz and 1 gig ram). All the componants of the studio work fine except for Final Cut Pro. When I launch that part of the studio it loads and then crashes and gives me a Kern_protection_failure. I have trashed the prefs several times. But it did not work. Any ideas as to why this part of the studio bundle does not work?

Hi Keith,

Kern protection failure messages (also called a kernel panic) can indicate an incompatibility between your OS and some components that are installed on your system. Within FCP it can also indicate the presence of corrupted files in your project (this will not be the case for you I think), or the presence of corrupted plugins. Last but not least it can indicate an application not loading because of lack of available memory. 1 gig ram is a totally absolute minimum for working with FCP5, 2 gigs is the advised minumum. But let's first check your system.

To do this we need more information:

Your OS
QT version
FCP version (have you updated anything ?)
Have you installed any 3rd party QT components (Filp4Mac, Perian, Divx...) ?
Have you installed any 3rd party plugins in FCP ?

Best wishes,

Ronny
