FCP runs slow after a while!!! please help

FCP runs slow after a while!!! please help (June 26, 2008 10:30AM) VicariousTV
Hi all

Just got the Mac pro quad core. Started off with the factory 2gigs ram, recently got 4 more(6 gigs), working with Final Cut Studio 2(latest updates). ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics.

After a while of working, FCP slows down(thought it was a ram issue), compositing any psd/moving anything from one side of the screen to the other has a huge delay, can't figure it out!!! The only things that help(for a while), is if I dump the PRAM or restart(sometimes helps).

Can only think something went wrong when I was copying stuff over(from G5), suitcase fusion(powerPC app) is faulty(likes to slower down when working with text from Borris 3d) or a psd problem. Its not only in FCP, seen one or two glitches in the OS(slight).

Please Help!!!

How big are your PSD files?

I've trashed the FCP Prefs already, except for my custom layouts and buttons(think I trashed those in the begining, dumped them so many times). Not sure if I had to do those as well?

And my PSD files are not that big, +/-30mb at most but nothing my G5 wouldn't wizz through!

??

Hi Vicar,

Select Apple > About This Mac and check if you really have 6 GB RAM available and working. In More Info > Memory you can check if all your RAM sticks are OK. You might have a problematic RAM stick, which usually causes slowdown and crashes.

Best wishes,

Ronny

Thanks all!!! Think I've figured it out!!!

The stills cache setting in FCP was at 100%. So I set it back to 10%. Seems to make sense, soon I'll find out!

Thanks again!!

Check all your PSDs in Photoshop.

Open each file, choose Image > Mode and check if ALL PSDs are in RGB mode. None of them should be CMYK.

All RGB.

Just dumped the prefs again, except dumped the .plist file aswell.
Thanks

Good idea. If this does not help, get back here and let's start from scratch.
